Norwich, is known as "The Rose of New
England," where three rivers, the Y antic,
the Shetucket, and the Quinebaug, flow
into the city and form its harbor and
from which the Thames River flows south
into Long Island Sound. Norwich was
founded in 1659. In the 19th century,
Norwich came to be known as a
manufacturing city because of its many
large mills and at one time was home to
more millionaires then anywhere else in
the country. Several Norwich
neighborhoods still exist today, and
maintain independent identities. They
are recognized by official signs marking
their boundaries. These neighborhoods of
Norwich are Norwichtown, Bean Hill,
Yantic, Taftville, Greeneville, Occum,
East Great Plains, Thamesville, Laurel
Hill and Chelsea the original "downtown"
area.
Today Norwich is home to a very
culturally diversed population of
approximately 41,000 people. Nestled
between two of the largest casinos in
the world, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun,
this beautiful city offers so much
history, architectural beauty, culture,
arts, and natural beauty for all to
enjoy. When you visit and stay in
Norwich you are only minutes away to any
number of activities of interest to
satisfy everyone's palette, such as
wineries, orchards, farms, beaches,
boating, world class entertainment,
numerous spas, sports events, baseball,
basketball, ice skating, golfing and
much much more. |
